I belonged to the mystical valleys of Assam, more of a flamboyant tomboy type of person who used to hangout with friends in their house, often in an open “Jalsha” good food, music and enjoyment. Though my professional classical music training classes were serious enough, but, we all the students in our music class used to have funtime be it inside or outside the classroom. We had a local music cassette shop where the vendor used to help us with recorded version of popular musical songs and write them over on a blank cassette. It was value for money in those days and we used to explore every bit of opportunity of rehearsing and presenting these numbers in social gathering like friends parties, or in club annual or in Durga Puja. In those good ol’ days there was another great opportunity of musical show happening on the river cruise over River Brahmaputra. Life in Guwahati moved in slow pace and the intelligentsia class used to enjoy their quality time on these River Cruise the most important of them being the “Jolpori” wherein I chanced to make my presence felt. It was on one of these shows where I got connected with a recording house of Kolkata who invited me for a reality show in Kolkata. Though the reality show did not have good venture for my career I had something else to offer when I was invited for my maiden solo album of Bengali modern songs. I personally don’t know how the album faired in the market but it helped me to draw attention of the famous organizers in those days. As I moved from Assam to the cultural city of Kolkata I got introduced with some notable organizers. The first and foremost I’m always indebted to in my professional life is the famous organizer “Tochon Ghosh” of Kolkata. Shri Tochon Ghosh or Tochonda as popularly known is a great human being, down to earth person, who is working with the celebrities for last forty years. The able nephew of renowned Singer Smt Utpala Sen, Tochanda has touched the sky and created a fortune for many vocalist who are celebrity today. He took me to various corporate shows and used to send me for opening the innings and set the right stage for other performers pick up the momentum later. Though a difficult job for a simple person like me to enter the arena of electrifying crowd and razzmatazz suddenly, I just followed one principle, to stick to the fundamentals and work to my core where I’m the best i.e stage showmanship. This is not all but how I gained my passage overseas is another interesting story…..Wait for my next update shortly.
